How To Clean The Ice & Water Dispenser On A Kenmore Refrigerator

Dec 22, 2016

It's great having ice and cold water at your immediate disposal with just the press of a lever, but if you are starting to get funny tasting ice or water out of your Kenmore refrigerator's ice and water dispenser, it may be time for a good cleaning. Use proper cleaning supplies and tools to ensure that no parts become damaged during the cleaning process. Also keep in mind that the water and ice coming out of the dispenser can absorb foul odors in the fridge, so make sure the inside of your fridge is clean as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild dish soap
  • Sponge or soft cloth
  • Funnel
  • White vinegar
  • Soft bottle brush
  • Replacement filter

  • Consult your Kenmore owner's manual for any particulars regarding your model's ice and water dispenser.

  • Empty the ice from the ice bin and wash the bin with mild dish soap and warm water using a sponge or soft cloth. Do not use anything abrasive to clean, as bacteria can build up in scratches.

  • Turn the main water supply valve to the off position by turning it clockwise.

  • Depress the water dispenser lever to purge the water from the system.

  • Unscrew and separate the water supply from the copper tube at the back of the refrigerator.

  • Pour 3 to 4 cups of white vinegar down the copper tube using a funnel.

  • Depress the dispenser levers for both ice and water to run the vinegar through the system.

  • Reconnect the water supply.

  • Clean the entire dispenser compartment and dispenser nozzles with the white vinegar and sponge or soft cloth. Use a soft, scratch-resistant bottle brush to clean inside the nozzles.

  • Replace the filter. The filter on a Kenmore is usually located at the base of the fridge on the left-hand side. There will be a button you can press to release the filter.

  • Start the flow of water by repeatedly depressing and releasing the water dispenser lever for five-second durations until water comes out. Flush the system by continuing to do this for two more minutes.
