How To Remove The Taste From An Older Refrigerator Icemaker
Dec 08, 2016
It is not always the age of the refrigerator that causes ice to develop a foul taste, but the age of the ice maker parts in an older refrigerator could attribute to the taste of the ice. Old ice molds, ice bins and failure to manually defrost the freezer can transfer foul tastes to the ice cubes. Any refrigerator can produce bad-tasting ice if certain conditions exist. Knowing what conditions can cause your ice to taste bad can help your ice maker produce fresh-tasting ice.
Dump the old ice from the bin in the freezer. Old ice can develop a stale taste. Empty the ice from the bin every few weeks or when the taste returns.
Check for open food containers inside the fresh food compartment and freezer. Your ice cubes can absorb food odors, making them taste bad. Cover all exposed foods with lids, plastic wrap or contain them in sealable food bags.
Change the water filter in your older refrigerator or install an inline filter between the ice maker and the water supply. A newly installed or clean filter captures contaminates, such as dirt, rust, chloramines and detergents that could cause ice to taste bad.
Wipe the ice mold tray with a soft cloth and white vinegar to remove any water deposits that could cause the ice to taste bad. This may require removing the ice maker from the freezer. Because not all ice makers install the same way, you should contact your refrigerator manufacturer for ice maker removal instructions.
Replace old and damaged ice maker ice molds. Some molds have a nonstick coating that can begin to flake over time, causing your ice to taste bad. Contact your refrigerator manufacturer for replacement parts and instructions for your model refrigerator.
Check for a buildup of frost along the freezer walls. Frost buildup inside the freezer affects the taste of the ice. Empty all the items from your freezer. Depending on your model, place the freezer’s temperature control on defrost or press a defrost button. Frost buildup in a frost-free refrigerator may require a service call to repair the defroster behind the freezer walls.
Replace old ice bins. The plastic ice bin can absorb food odors and tastes and then transfer those odors and tastes to your ice.
